Junior High UDL in Action

EXAMPLE : Romeo and Juliet-Final Project Options

Remember you need to show your UNDERSTANDING of the play. What do you know?

Choose ONE of the following options:

1) 3-D Model

Create a 3-D model of the Globe Theater. Label all of the significant parts. Write a ½ page description of the Globe including interesting facts and history.

2) Film/Video

Create a video version of Romeo and Juliet. It can be a parody or follow the play precisely. Your video should show your understanding of the play. Your new version of the play should include at least one scene from each Act. It should be a minimum of 2 minutes long. Your new video should have at least 5 references to the original play. For example: in your parody there could be a reference to the Balcony scene and Romeo drinks a Red Bull energy drink to grow wings, this would be ONE reference.**See the rubric for more details on how to achieve your best mark for this project!!

3) Soundtrack to the play

Create a soundtrack for Romeo and Juliet. Include 10 songs (with lyrics). Each song should include at least 3 connections and should be explained in separate paragraphs in detail. Create the CD cover to go along with your written explanations. Color, artwork, effort! Include a title page, the song lyrics and your connection write-ups with your CD Cover.

4) Song Parody

Create a song parody (like the one  I created). This entails picking a song, printing out the lyrics and changing the words to suit the play. You must include

-a minimum of 10 “connections” to the play in your new lyrics. For example: in our version of “What’s my Name” by Rhianna, I changed the lyrics to “You know I kiss by the book”. This is one connection to the play.

-type up your new lyrics and highlight the 10 connections.

In order to receive the highest mark, you will need to perform your new song for the class with background music. **See the rubric  for more details on how to achieve your best mark for this project!!

5) Monologue

Memorize 20-30 lines of your favorite scene and perform it in front of the class. Props, costumes, drama!

6) Diary Entries

Write 10 diary entries (of one of the main characters of the play). Each entry should be ½ page to a page in length and should demonstrate your knowledge of the character and the plot.

7) Scrapbook

Create a scrapbook that represents the characters in the play (must include-Romeo, Juliet, The Nurse, Mercutio, Benvolio, Tybalt) Each character should have their own page and at least 10 images/graphics/symbols per character. A brief explanation of the page is mandatory as well as a title page.

8) Writing

Re-write Romeo and Juliet in another style. Must be at least 2 pages long, single-spaced. Spelling and grammar will be marked.

9) T-shirt Design

Design 10 of your own t-shirts with a Romeo and Juliet theme. This could be your favorite quote, scene, a theme, a symbol, etc. It involves actually creating your design on ONE real t-shirt and modeling it and explaining it for the class. You must also present your other designs (they do not have to be put on a real t-shirt).

10) Newspaper

Create the front and inside pages of the Veronian Times, a Romeo and Juliet themed newspaper. What would the lastest headlines be?....or create the paper in the style of a Celebrity Gossip magazine. Must include at least 5 story items. Use your creativity!! Show your knowledge of the play! See link for ideas http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/shakespeare/60secondshakespeare/themes_romeojuliet.shtml

11) Comic

Create a comic book version of the play, highlighting the major events. Include something from each Act.

12) Board Game

Create a board game that involves trivia/facts from the play. Directions, game pieces, etc must be included. You must present your game to the class. Please “test” it out before presenting.

13) Character Scavenger Hunt

Romeo and Juliet Character Scavenger Hunt-This involves choosing 7 characters from the play and choosing 5 objects that would “match” or “connect” with each character. For example, if you chose Romeo as one of your characters…what 5 objects could represent Romeo or his traits? He tended to make rash decisions…                               You need to write this information down on the provided sheets-without telling anyone your decisions. You will need to have 7 Ziploc bags; one for each character and you will need to place the actual objects for the character in each bag. Without labeling the bags, you will present them to the class and see if the class can guess which characters you have chosen OR you can do it as a power point display.

14) Art/Painting/Drawing

Create ONE piece of art for EACH Act. 5 pieces in total. Write a detailed paragraph explaining how your “art” or scene relates to the play. Remember, you are trying to show me your knowledge, so be detailed.

15) Your Own Idea?

Suggest your own project idea! This involves scheduling a meeting at recess or lunch to discuss your plan with Mrs. Longley. Your idea must demonstrate your knowledge of the play!

(research the history of the the Elizabethan Era, plan an Elizabethan Menu and bring it to class...etc)
